Bali Silver Beads – A brief history

During the 14th century Majapahit Empire colonized Bali and declared the natives of Bali as Sudras or the low caste. By 16th Century, Bali became a sanctuary for Hindus who were forced out of Islamic Java. People who sought refuge here included noblemen and gold smiths. There are lores attached with the craftsmanship of Bali silver beads. There are stories like Lord Mahadeva himself came down to teach the craftsmen the art of jewelry making. Whatever it is, today, Bali is the biggest centre for precious metal crafting. Though initially, the craftsmen produced solid gold ornaments, later on they tried their hand in silver.

Bali sterling silver beads are known for their purity and intricate craftsmanship. Bali silver beads were largely and mainly produce in a village called Celuk. This village has a long tradition of metal work dating back to the ancient days. In those days, Celuk produced gold and silver beads and jewelry mainly for the nobles. However, today, they are professionally crafting silver beads for the international market.

Bali silver beads became popular because they are not only handmade but the silver smiths of Bali specialize in crafting granulated silver beads which are intricately carved and arranged in attractive geometric patterns.

Initially, the craftsmen copied the designs of traditional Gold Jewelry to make silver jewelry.  Today, with an increase demand for silver jewelry in the world market, the Balinese silver smiths produce silver beads and silver ornaments as per the demands of the foreign designers. However, there is always a demand for traditional Bali silver beads.

Balinese by nature prefer to wear only jewelry made from solid gold. They manufacture the silver beads mainly for the world market. These beads are popular not only because of their designs but because of the authenticity and the quality of silver used.

With increasing popularity of the sterling silver beads from Bali, there are many unscrupulous players in the market selling fake beads. You would also beads manufactured in Turkey, China and India. A novice jeweler would find it difficult to identify the originally Bali silver beads from the fake ones. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase the silver beads from a reliable source – either directly from the silver smiths or from a reliable middle man.
