clam digging

this weekend we went down to the kenai penninsula clam digging. it was incredible. i think i like the drive down there better than the drive up to denali. it’s just indescribable. first you go through anchorage and then around the turnagin arm, where the view is the ocean. there’s whale there but we’ve not seen one yet. i plan to go whale watching in the spring and finally see one. then you drive through the mountains and rivers. rivers that are the prettiest color i’ve ever seen. they’re like this turquoise-ish green color against the backdrop of the mountains. it feels like a dream. then the beach was also beautiful. there’s just something about the vastness of the mass of water for as far as the eye can see. makes you feel so small and insignificant. and definitely thankful that the same hands that made that made the details of you. at least that’s what it does for me!
we had a blast. it was my first beach experience wearing polar fleece, but i will take it. any day. our friends sarah and paulo went, too, and their cute boys. and we hung out at her aunt and uncle’s house down there some. it was great to feel like part of the family.
then tonight was the icing on the cake. we braved cooking up some homemade fried clam strips. boy, were they tasty. we’re spoiled. fresh clam, a trip to the alaskan beach, kids and grownups having pure fun, surrounded by gorgeous scenery. so thankful!
i had too many pics to put in the post. click on the little flickr sqaures below to see more and see our friends!

Sounds like you had a very good time clam digging. Store up all those good times for telling us when you come home. I hope you remember to tell all. I can hardly wait to hear Abby’s and Lilly’s version of everything you get to do. Tell them that Nannaw will listen to all they have to say and that’s a promise.
Abby surprised me the other day when she called and said they got the books I had sent. I’ve wondered if she did that on her own, but it thrilled me to hear her say it. I promise it was a short call.
Ginger is helping Pappaw get his truck tag renewed tomorrow. It’s because she seems to know the right people—certainly not an easy job. I’m really lonesome for Andy but I’m sure he’s a busy guy these days. Mimi is helping me get my meds in order.
Our pharmacist made suggestions for changes that are helping.
Mike, am I right in thinking you have not made a trip back home yet. You deserve one whenever you can. We missssss all of you.
Muches love to all of you, Nannaw Austin
